The Omega Story

The Omega watch story begins in 1848, when founder Louis Brandt begun hand assembling key-wound precision pocket watches from elements supplied by local craftsmen in his principality La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the northwest corner of Switzerland. However, the Omega name didn’t appear until 1894, after Louis Brandt had passed away and his watchmaking traditions were taken over by his sons, Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt. Omega watches have long been related with glamorous screen and sports stars–the Omega Seamaster is widely known and esteemed for being the watch of choice for James Bond–with current ambassadors including Pierce Brosnan, Nicole Kidman, tennis player Anna Kournikova, and swimmers Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe.

But Omega is more than just a fashionable watch. In 1965, the Omega Speedmaster chronograph was “flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions” as the only wristwatch to have withstood all of the U.S. space agency’s severe tests, including passing grades for extreme shocks, vibrations, and temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius. The biggest moment in the Speedmaster’s history was undoubtedly 20 July 1969 at 02:56 GMT, when it recorded man’s initial steps on the Moon’s surface as percentage of the Apollo 11 mission. Omega watches rocketed off to space on numerous subsequent missions, including visits to Skylab and the historic Apollo-Soyuz link-up of Soviet and American astronauts in 1975.

In more recent years, Omega formulated the world’s firstborn self-winding wristwatch with central tourbillon in 1994 and made history in 1999 with the firstborn mass-produced watch incorporating the co-axial escapement, invented in conjunction with widely known and esteemed English master watchmaker George Daniels. In simple terms, the escapement is the heart of a mechanical watch, generating the impulses that make the mechanism move. Omega’s Co-Axial Escapement drasti reduces the friction among the constituents that transmit energy to the other components, manufacturing more outstanding stability and precision and reducing service requirements.

Today, Omega is known for it is stringent testing of new movements, cases, and bands. Each new Omega motion is tested on the wrist in existent Omega models, while respective laboratory tests are conducted to determine temperature-resistance, shock-resistance and vibration-resistance.

5I love this watch
By M. Epstein
I didn’t buy this watch through Amazon because you may genuinely find it for less by merely calling an authorized Omega merchandiser and proposing what you think is a reasonable price. Overall, I give this watch 5 stars. Sometimes I merely stare at it and think “wow, this watch is beautiful.” The motion is smooth and the self-winding mechanism in truth has rather a bit of inertia behind it. There will be times that you’ll move your arm suddently, and your wrist will gyrate for 15 seconds. At firstborn I thought the watch was a bit heavy, but now I don’t give it a second thought. I also use the stopwatch much more oftentimes than I thought I would. Although I love the watch, there are a few minor complaints (none of which fetch my rating down):
1) it’s not always so easy to read the numerical date. Part of me wishes the watch had a date window rather of a hand that points to the date on the outer edge of the watch. That said, having the day of the week listed was a will have to for me, and Omega doesn’t have a watch that features the day of the week AND a date window. I am getting applied to it though!
2) the latch on the band scratches somewhat effortlessly (which is probably the case for most metal-banded watches). That said, I don’t mind if the band is scratched, as I’m for the most part concerned with the crystal. After 6 months of wear, I’m happy to report there’s not a single scratch on the sapphire (knock on wood). I’m in truth planning on switching the band to black leather to switch things up.

4Nice watch
By Anthony James Hayes
This watch is very nice. The picture makes the watch look…..ugly. However it is a very beautiful watch in person. This watch is day-date which made me buy this over a traditionalisti looking speedmaster.
